How to helpSend us your family tree If your surname is one of the group of Ó Maelearcaidh clan names you can assist us tremendously by forwarding us a copy of your own family tree. The benefit of this to us is that it will enable us to differentiate between your family members and other clan members with identical Christian names. In the past confusion over surnames in the same location led to the extensive use of local nicknames to identify individual families, without which it would have been very difficult to establish which Thomas, Patrick or Mary Mullarkey a person was referring to. Hence the writers family were separately identified as the Tom Mór's. In the absence of such information, the evidence of living family members becomes more important to clarify each family member's correct relationship in the family. Therefore, it is important in preparing your own family tree that the information you include is as full and accurate as possible. Hence before you draw up the tree itself you should first record the following details for each family member, giving each family member a separate record number:-
If the clan members are nolonger living in Ireland, then to link them up to records in Ireland can be near impossible without plenty of information. Hence for overseas clan the following information should be sought:-
Armed with all the data you should then prepare a family tree starting with your grandchildrens' generation or your childrens'/nephews' generation if that is the first generation and then progressively linking each subsequent generation. It sounds daunting but if you restrict it to just your Mullarkey relatives and their spouses it is manageable with a little patience. Give each individual in the tree a number. This number you then cross reference to that persons data (dates, places and events) mentioned above, which you show on a separate piece of paper. In this way the tree diagram is a manageable size and the information recorded separately about each person can readily be cross-referenced to them. You should check you data and tree for errors and finally when you are happy that it is as complete as possible, then you can either post a copy to us or fax it to us. If you wish you can also email the data to us. To email the tree you will need to scan it first and then zip the file, before sending it to us as an attachment. In order to comply with the provisions of the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 in the United Kingdom, no details pertaining to any living person in this database will be released by the Maintainer of this database to any other party. Data held on living individuals is only held as part of the personal genealogical hobby of the Maintainer of the database. Only Genealogical information pre 1900 may be released to third parties at the discretion of the Maintainer of the database. Donations Volunteers who sift through indexes of various record offices provide their time free, but even with this terrific resource there is usually no substitute for purchasing original records. The costs of acquiring records such as birth, death and marriage certificates, copies of wills, etc. and travel to the various record repositories is an ever increasing strain on Clan resources. Endevouring to finance the latest Clan project causes delay in progressing with the Foundation's objectives. It is unfortunate that finance should need to be mentioned, however progress is connected to funding. In England and Wales for example one full certificate costs £9 (US$12) so that it would only take 100 certificates to reach £900 (US$1,200). To obtain copies of all English and Welsh records back to 1837 may involve acquisition of some 6,000 records. This would cost an estimated £54,000 (US$72,000) and provide just 10% of our clan records to 1837. There are moves afoot in Britain to make older records available at a lower cost, however the costs above illustrate the level of challenge. One major way that you can therefore assist is by making a gift to enable us to continue to progress forward. If you are willing to provide financial help you should read the terms for assisting us set out below first. Terms for providing us with assistance
