Clan who have achieved fame
INDUSTRY
-
Jon Mullarky
Many male Irish emigrants have initially gained employment in their new adopted
country in the construction industry. Often prejudice only left open such
employment areas as the building industry, as the host population were less
willing to take such jobs. In time the Irish began to monopolize these sectors
and branched into the more skilled parts of industry. This concentration in
certain sectors began to work to the benefit of the Irish community, providing
a financial base from which they could go on to give their children more
opportunities to progress further.
Jon is one clan member who has progressed almost as far as it is possible
within the technical aspects of building technologies. He is a concrete
specialist with CONNCOR Inc based in Washington DC. He is currently supporting
the FHWA's office of Technology Applications' High performance concrete
programs. Previously Jon headed the engineering staff of the National Ready
Mixed Concrete Association and is a Fellow of the ACI (American Concrete
Institute), serving on several technical committees.

Pat Mullarky
Science and technology are major industrial growth areas of the late 20th and
early 21st centuries. It is in the new technologies where clan will
increasingly make their impact. Computer software design is where Pat along
with his colleagues Bill Dorsey and Paul Robin have made a name for themselves.
Recently they have gained some notoriety in the Computer publications for their
development of the controversial encryption software, Nautilus which enables
telephone voice conversations to be securely encrypted. This has brought the
three into conflict with those agencies fighting organized crime and terrorism.
These agencies fear the impact that encryption may have on hampering covert
operations, by making police phone tapping ineffective.
Nevertheless the other side of the coin is that the three believe there is a
freedom of speech issue at stake, which the software is also designed to
protect. Encryption is an issue which will inevitably return, as computer power
increases and with it the capacity of state, commercial enterprises and even
other private individuals to intercept personal telephonic traffic increases.
Pat is a successful part of the new software industry and will no doubt go on
to produce many more programs which impact on our lives.
- Tom
Mullarky
Is the Manager of Facilities World Headquarters for Pitney
Bowes Inc based in Stamford Connecticut and came to our attention when he was
commenting in FM Technology Update on use of the company's intranet to handle
order requests for engineering repairs. The new intranet saved Pitney Bowes
$18,000 per year just on bringing their order despatch in house, rather than
using an outsourcing company.
Their intranet site developed on Web software ColdFusion displays
information on the company's database. Business forms were developed in Adobe
Acrobat format to then enable customers to make their own requests. Tom noted
great satisfaction by both customers able to order repairs and company
mechanics, who were able to cut response times and interact with the customers.
Adaptability of the clan to new situations has been our greatest quality.
The new information highway society posses many threats to old economy
companies, but it also provides new possibilities for methods of work and as
clan members are showing, the rewards are there for the taking.
- Tammy
Mullarky
Tammy worked for many years as a researcher in the new
field of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. She eventually progressed to
Laboratory Manager at ZymoGenetics, where she developed a high yield yeast
expression system for recombinant insulin.
Continuing her personal development, Tammy then undertook business training
and joined the well known Hoffman-LaRoche Corporation in their mergers and
acquisitions group. Using her business skills and knowledge of the Biotech
sector, she founded several companies in the Pacific North West before joining
AnorMED. Tammy initially came to our attention following an announcement by
AnorMED Inc, based at Vancouver in British Columbia on 1 June 2000, that she
had been appointed Vice President for Business Development in the firm. This
came no doubt as a result of her key efforts in the team which established the
company's strategic business partnership with the giant AstraZeneca
Corporation, for the exclusive worldwide licensing of the pharmaceutical
product ZD0473.
Her role will continue to include her managing of the Company's corporate
partnering, in-licensing and market research. AnorMED specializes in the
discovery and development of small molecular therapeutics for the treatment of
a number of diseases including cancer, HIV and inflammatory illnesses. We wish
Tammy every success in her career and applaude her contribution to mankind in
the fight against disease.
PUBLIC /CIVIL SERVICE
- Mary
Mullarky
Mary was the first woman to be appointed Chief Justice to the Colorado Supreme
Court of Justice on 1 August 1998. Prior to that she had since 29 June 1987
been the first woman Justice in Colorado. Since that time another woman has
similarly been recognised, which has helped Mary in this male dominated field.
The law is yet another area in which several clan have succeeded, but Mary's
achievement is singular. We wish Mary every success with her career and hope
she goes on to even higher office.
-
Fr. Edmund Mullarkey
Fr Edmund Mullarkey was a Franciscan friar in Ulster in the turbulent period
just prior to and following the defeat of the native Irish princes at Kinsale
in 1601. Fr Edmund, initially acting as a courier between the leaders of Irish
rebels and their Spanish allies, was gradually drawn into the role of a
principal instigator of rebellion. He was active in his various underground
activities from at least 1608 to 1615, being involved both in the O'Dogherty
rebellion of 1608 and the O'Neill - O'Cahan conspiracy of 1615. In that short
period he would have also seen the imposition of repressive anti-Catholic
legislation in the Irish Parliament, confiscation of land from Catholics and
the Plantation of Eastern Ulster with Protestant Scots and English. These
events no doubt were much of the reason behind his increased involvement in
insurrection. In view of the forces against them, the depleted Irish rebels of
the period were never in a position to withstand English military power on
their own. Buaidh nó Bás ('Death or victory') the old motto of
the Scottish hero William Wallace may have been at the heart of Edmund's
philosophy. The wishful thinking for foreign help and desperate hope of the
rebels which comes across from the history of the period, leads one to believe
that even Edmund may have suspected their actions were futile.
- Paddy
Mullarkey
He recently came to our attention when on 31 August 1999
we saw a notice published advertising a public meeting by An Coiste um Chuntais
Phoiblí (Committee of Public Accounts) sub-committee on Revenue matters,
at which Patrick was due to report as Secretary General in the Department of
Finance of the Republic of Ireland.
This is almost certainly the highest Civil Service or public service
appointment held by any clan member in Ireland since the early 1500's. It is
quite an achievement for Patrick in his own right, but it also says a great
deal about the clan's historic resilience and the indominable qualities of the
human spirit to overcome all difficulties.
SPORT
- Michael
Mularkey
In October 1986 Michael first came to our attention while he was playing in the
attack as a wide receiver with the American Football team the Minnesota
Vikings. Shortly afterwards he moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Mike
continued to play as tight end until 1991.
When his playing career came to an end in 1992, Mike moved into coaching and
after cutting his teeth in the College scene with Concordia, he made the
transition into the professional game with Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1984.
The high point of his coaching career came when Mike joined the Steelers in
1996 as tight end coach. We shall continue to follow Mike's career with
interest.
ENTERTAINMENT &
BROADCASTING
-
Neil Mullarkey
In December 1987 we first noticed Neil appearing in 01- for London produced by
Mentor Films for Thames TV, part of the British ITV television network. The
program was a critical guide to what's on offer in entertainment in London.
Neil started his career as President of the Cambridge University Footlights
company. The Cambridge Footlights has been the breading ground for most of the
best of British comedy talent from memebers of Monty Python to Rowan
Atkinson.
Since then Neil has teamed up with Mike Myers developing a style of surreal
discussion, often about matters of current affairs. Being a team player has
seen him regularly featured in sketches on British television in satirical and
stand-up comedy programs. Neil is a founder member of the famous London based
Comedy Store Players, and in whose sell out shows he continues to appear. In
providing his talent in group comedy ventures Neil has not perhaps earned the
fame of the likes of Paul Merton and Josie Lawrence. Since Mike Myers return to
his native Canada, Neil has also had a double act with Nick Hancock and
featured on a wide range of television programs including "Whose Line is
it anyway" and increasingly adventurous one man shows.
Apart from the standup comedy, Neil has appeared in several feature length
comedy films including "Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery"
and the spoof Spaghetti Western "A Fistful of fingers."
His recent ventures include "All that Mullarkey," a very humerous and
somewhat irreverent re-telling of historical and social developements seen
through the eyes of the Mullarkey Clan. In the show Neil turns the spotlight on
all those characters who have written our clan's contribution out of historical
and social events of the last 400 years. If you get the opportunity to see the
show, try to get along and support him. Neil also advertises that he is keen to
meet Clan members, so you might get more than you expect from the show!.
- Maria
Mularkey
Maria is yet another clan member who has succeeded in her
chosen field of program production, in both TV and radio. She rose to our
attention when she produced The NCF Mid Morning show on Midwest Radio station,
based in the west of Ireland. From there Maria has moved on to RTE, the Irish
National Broadcast TV station to produce the program Streetwise.
PROFESSIONS
- Tom
Mullarkey
In 1987 we there was an article in the British daily
newspaper, "The Guardian," about Tom Mullarkey, named architect of
the year in Ulster by the magazine Architect Ulster. Tom won the award for his
design for the Ardowen Community Theatre. Costing £1.5 million to build
and described as 'Mullarkey's Bridge of Glass', it is located on the banks of
Loch Erne in Fermanagh. The 300 seat theatre is a mixture of modern and old
incorporating the defunct Fermanagh district Council offices. Tom's design was
inspired by the low foyer of the United Nations building in New York and seen
from the loch, the theatre appears to be a vastly expanded conservatory.
In his design, Tom Mullarkey managed to keep the profile of the building
low, by creating low ceilinged public areas on two foyer floors facing the
water. The green glass facade of purpose made bottle glass is divided into tall
thin panes and was the creation of Stan Billings, a curtain wall expert. Behind
the glass wall is a steel frame carrying the walls and ceiling. Unglazed parts
of the wall and roof are clad with Welsh Penryn slate, which links through to
the roof of the old Council building. Passing through the foyer, the public
areas have an unrestricted view into the performers Green room, whilst in the
auditorium itself the perimeter aisles run down the rake of the seats to meet
the stage at its own level, thereby permitting interaction between actors and
audience. Apart from the deftly designed auditorium, it is the spacial
experience of the double decked foyer with view over the loch, the floors
floating clear of the glazing, and its twin staircases that mark out the
excellence of Tom's architectural achievement. The building was described as
the finest example of positive, creative architecture seen in Ulster.
- Vin
Mularkey
Vin came to our attention as as Chief Financial Officer of
Digital Equipment Corporation. The corporation at the time had second quarter
sales of $3.2 billion. The company had just sold it's Alpha manufacturing
facility to Intel. During this time the FTC did not challenge the deal and
Digital seems to have been very upbeat about the financial future.
It is highly satisfying to see the success of a clan member in high powered
corporate America. Again the success Vin has achieved points the way and that
with dedication there can be no limit to achievement.
- David
Mullarkey
We first noted David's career achievement when we were
investigating clan success in the field of international law and tax planning.
David is the Partner in charge of Corporate sector matters in Hong Kong, for
the international law firm of Linklaters. Though David did not qualify as a
solicitor with Linklaters he has spent most of his career with them. Working
primarily in the area of UK taxation, David became a Partner in the London
Office of Linklaters in 1988, before taking on the role of Managing Partner of
the Hong Kong Office in 1994.
Since moving to Hong Kong, David has further specialized in advising on the
tax and legal aspects of cross-border investment structures, mergers and
acquisitions, joint ventures structured finance and investment funds.
Additionally, as a leading authority on the Asian investment scene, David has
published a number of publications including, "Holding Companies/locations
in Asia", "Telecommunications in Asia", "International
Mergers and Joint Ventures", and "Marketing Asian Funds to European
Investors."
David is clearly a heavyweight in the fields of Asian investment/finance and
international tax, proving that no aspect of human achievement is beyond the
reach of talented clan individuals wherever they are born, and whatever their
background.
- Michael
T Mullarkey
The clan must have a gift for understanding the bottom
line, as Michael is a clan member who has also achieved in the field of
Management accounts and Corporate finance. We noted him in December 2000,
working as the Corporate Finance Officer and Treasurer at International Game
Technology. This Reno, Nevada based company is quoted on the New York stock
exchange and employs 3,400 staff.
EDUCATION
- Dr.
Dona Mularkey
Many of our clan have overcome the constraint of
poverty following emigration to the USA. New opportunities have allowed many to
succeed in business, the arts, science and sport.
Dona is a shining example of the possibilities open to clan who have
developed their talents through education and diligent efforts. In 1997 Dona
joined the faculty at UMUC, teaching computer studies and business management
courses . She has more practical experience in industry, having worked for 12
years with Texas Instruments Inc as manager of corporate technical education.
Amongst her qualifications are BSME, MSME, MBA, and Phd.
Dona's contribution to computer science education was recognised recently
with the award of a fellowship by the American Association for the Advancement
of Science.
THE VISUAL
ARTS
- Gabrielle
Mullarkey
Hush Hush, the first novel published Gabrielle Mullarkey
was reviewed in the Irish Press recently. She received glowing reviews for this
witty and irreverent novel from the literary critics of both the Sunday
Independent and the Irish News.
Born in Oxford, England of Irish parents she made a career in Journalism
writing regular short stories for Women's magazine's such as Women's Own,
Women's Realm, Chat, Take a Break, That's Life etc. It has not therefore been a
major departure for Gabrielle to extend her talent into novels. Being brought
up in a large Irish family has imbued her with much of the wit and love of the
"crack" which shows through her writing.
Like many other Irish born overseas, Gabrielle has many other talents and
qualities stemming from her upbringing, not the least of which is her self
belief and courage of conviction. But unlike many with similar aspirations,
Gabrielle has followed through her love of Irishness, by choosing as an adult
to resettle in Ireland. We wish her every success with her writing.
- Maureen
Mullarkey
Maureen has developed her artistic talents through the
medium of paint. Painting is perhaps one of the most difficult mediums in which
to succeed and yet Maureen has developed her own style and following.
Her syle incorpoarates aspects of impressionism whilst never straying too
far from the real world. Many of her works concentrate on capturing the essence
of the human condition in all it's many facets. Her portraits endevour to
encaptulate both the emotional and sexual chartacter of her subjects.
One sees in the work of Maureen many different influences from the clasical
artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci through to more contemporary artists such as
the early work of Picasso.
A strength of her own viewpoint shows through the art by which we can
conclude that as an artist she will continue to develope her own style. We wish
her every success. For those curious to view some of her works, Maureen has a
website at www.studiomatters.com/home/home.html.
- Karen
Mullarkey
Creative arts are supposed to be a major facet of the
Celts, perhaps this explains why there appear to be several clan members who
have made a name for themselves in either the visual or the performing arts. We
have come across a photographic archive called the Mullarky collection held in
the Denver Public Library. The collection notes much of the native American
culture of New Mexico in the period of the 1890's to 1920's. There is also a
famous photography photo store in Gallup, which may have been connected to the
original photographer.
Perhaps photography and graphics are therefore in the clan blood. Karen
Mullarkey is certainly a highly successful Photo Editor, who we have seen
referred to in various publications. She has been a Director of Photography for
Sports Illustrated, Picture Editor at Newsweek, Chief Picture Editor for
Rolling Stone and Assistant Director of Photography at Life magazine.
Apart from her photography work, Karen has also been involved in producing
numerous high definition television documentaries for the Japanese NHK network,
and in producing educational CD roms. Most recently Karen joined Zing Network
Inc. in charge of all editorial matters and will no doubt continue to make a
significant contribution to the visual arts in America.
